Colorful practice: Purple steeple eaters

It was a festive practice this morning/afternoon at the Vassar Track, as many of our athletes put in their final hard paces before the upcoming MAAC Championships this weekend at Monmouth. Of course, "festive" is easy when the sun is bright and warm and the temperatures soar to the 70s. Nothing feels better than great spring weather, especially after the chilly days last week. Here is a photo of "steeple siblings" Nicki Nesi and Jake Hensler, who inadvertently dressed similarly on this day in purple and black (what's with Jake's goofy grin anyway?) and did similar workouts in which they did some intervals over hurdles on the track. Both runners are steeplechase specialists and both will be racing the event on Saturday at MAAC. Here's hoping the sun shines on us all this weekend as it did on Wednesday at practice.

Luke Shane: 7th place at New Jersey Marathon

Congrats to Marist Running Alum Luke Shane for his seventh place finish at the New Jersey Marathon on Sunday. Luke ran a strong time of 2:50:30, an average of 6:31 per mile. While he wasn't thrilled with the time, we are proud of his mostly solo effort after a difficult winter of training. Nicely done, Luke!

Who invited HIM?

It was a great weekend of alumni visits, starting with that troublemaker Deedy (who invited HIM? ... pictured here, trying to look like Kevin Youkilis) and Doug (Hild was in town but we didn't seem him). And then at the Yale meet, it was great to see Addie DiFrancesco and our old friend Bob Sweeney, in town from Colorado. And, of course, Conklin showed up with coffee for the coaches. Nicely done!

Plenty of assistance

The last few weeks of the outdoor track season, which happens to be right now, are among the busiest of the entire year in our calendar. In the span of a few weeks, there are several meets crammed in there, with several hundreds of miles that need to be traveled via bus and van. Usually, I am the primary van shuttler between Penn Relays, Yale, Vassar and daily practice. But these things cannot be accomplished on crutches, so Coach Horton and Coach Chuck have had an extremely busy few days.

On Thursday and Friday, Terry did the Penn shuffle, which involves driving our athletes down to the hotel outside of Philly, driving into Philly to get the Penn Relays packet, driving back to the hotel to get the athletes, and back to Philly for the meet. And then again on Friday, before returning to campus in the evening. A day “off” on Saturday to attend to family things, and then back at it at Yale on Sunday.

Chuck? Yikes! He had quite the whirlwind weekend. He checked in at the ladies’ practice on Thursday afternoon, then drove down to Penn for the Thursday night distance races. He left Penn on Thursday night and drove to Mahwah, NJ, crashing there for a few hours before going to his teaching job on Friday morning. He worked a full day, came to practice in the afternoon, and then drove the women who were competing on Saturday at Penn down to Philly again on Friday afternoon/evening. Up early for Kristi Licursi’s awesome racewalk on Saturday morning; back to Franklin Field for the women’s 4x800 relay on Saturday afternoon; back to Poughkeepsie late Saturday night; up early Sunday for the Yale meet all day. And then at night, it was trying to figure out the entries for this week’s meets. And then, back at work on Monday morning. Phew. Got all that?

And now this week, we have the Vassar Twilight meet on Friday night, followed by MAAC on Saturday/Sunday down at Monmouth. It’s a lot of traveling, planning and logistics in a short amount of time. It’s a lot of assistance from our assistant coaches, and we insist that they are the best guys for the job. We are grateful for them each and every day, but especially in these busy late April days. Nicely done.

Penn Relays: Women's 4x800 relay results

Our final event of the long weekend at Penn Relays was the women’s 4x800 relay. Coach Chuck reported that the ladies had to sit/stand in the paddock area for about 20 minutes, waiting for their heat to hit the track. This is typical of the crowded Penn Relays, and it makes it difficult for athletes to be properly warmed up for their events. Not an excuse at all; any athlete who has run a relay at Penn will tell you that’s the deal. It does make it tough for them. We were hoping for a bit better, but the same four ladies will give it a go next weekend at MAACs and we’ll be hoping for bigger and better things. Here are the the results, with the official splits courtesy of the Penn Relays Web site.

Next up: Yale Invitational on Sunday.

Penn Relays: 5,000-meter racewalk results

Call it “Breakfast at Penn.” Kristi Licursi opened up the day at 8 a.m., in the women’s junior racewalk, placing 14th overall among the juniors in 26:46.14. This was a 31-second PR for Kristi. We are so proud of her efforts in the racewalk, which is her singular pursuit on the team. And, we are thrilled she was able to do it on the big stage at Penn Relays this morning. You can see her with a proud Coach Chuck after the race, and splits courtesy of Chuck are below.
