BU Terrier: Men's results and splits

Strong day top to bottom on the Magic Carpet. Great to see Marist Running Alum Doug Ainscow on both days, as Doug made the short drive from southern New Hampshire to support his brothers on the Red Foxes. He even resumed his role as split taker (emeritus?) and was his usual reliable self when we needed him. Because there were so many things of note, I included my commentary after most event results. I typed these splits on the bumpy bus ride home as we slice through bitter cold and windy conditions, so if there are any math errors, let me know and I will correct them.

Coach Pete says: A lot! Wow, wow, wow! What tremendous breakthrough efforts from our sophomores. Saad lopped off nearly 10 seconds from his previous best, which was pretty darn good to start with, and check out the eye-popping last lap! Stefan … holy cow! He had never broken 9:00 before and what does he do? He CRUSHES it. Speaking of crushing … how about that last kilometer. Sub-8:30 pace. Both guys ran great, great races.

Kilometer splits: 3:04, 3:00, 3:02, 3:09, 3:12.92
61. Omar Perez 15:41.55
39, 76 (37), 1:54 (38), 2:31 (37), 3:07 (36)
3:44 (37), 4:20 (36), 4:58 (38), 5:36 (38), 6:13 (37)

13:12 (38), 13:51 (39), 14:28 (37), 15:07 (39), 15:41.55 (34.55)
Kilometer splits: 3:07, 3:06, 3:10, 3:11, 3:07.55
Coach Pete says: Kenny ran tough in the fastest section with a suicidal pace. The second section may have been a better spot for him, but he made the best of a difficult situation. Spencer and Rizzo both ran superb PR efforts, as did Omar. Spencer PRed by about 30 seconds, Rizzo the same and Omar ran his first ever indoor race with a 16-second PR over his best outdoor time. Kilometer splits were very strong, but there is definitely room for improvement in terms of late-race giddy-up. We’ll work on that. Being the last race of the day, it is difficult for these guys to sit around all day but they did more than OK with it.
60-meter hurdles
24. Alex Cunningham 8.62
Coach Pete says: Bad start (epic bad start, in fact) doomed Hakim here but his mid-race recovery portends good things for the 110s outdoors.
1,600-meter relay
41. Marist A (Nestor Taylor 52.4, Nate Lungarini 51.3, Kyle Heubner 51.4, Zach Berzal 50.8) 3:26:12
49. Marist B (Alex Cunningham 51.5, Josh Siegel 54.0, Sami Ellougani 55.4, Mark Vuono 52.5) 3:33.59
Coach Pete says: Both relays won their respective heats and did so in decisive fashion. The A relay was strong top to bottom. Give credit to Hakim for a very strong opening leg in the B relay, and kudos to Vuono for never saying no when we need him to fill a spot in a relay. And he didn’t just fill a spot; he ran a respectable split and brought the team to a win in the section.
Long jump
42. Andrew Rokoszak 5.47 meters (17 feet, 11.5 inches)
44. Brandon Heard 5.24 meters (17 feet, 2.25 inches)

BU Terrier: Morrison qualifies for IC4As in 1,000

Congratulations to freshman Steven Morrison for his outstanding collegiate debut at 1,000 meters. Steven qualified for IC4As in the event and became the second fastest runner in school history in the five-lap race, trailing only school record holder David Marthy. He ran a tough and smart race, with an excellent finish. Nicely done, Steve!

BU Terrier: Women's 4x400 relay school record!

One of the oldest track records on the books went down in exhilarating and somewhat unexpected fashion, as the team of Danisha Craig, Courtney Cartwright, Jenn Horner and Molly Weeks sprinted to a 4x400-meter relay time (and section victory) of 4:01.97. This eclipses a 15-year-old mark of 4:02.49. All of these ladies were doubling back -- Danisha, Courtney and Molly from the 400, and Jenn from the 800 -- thus the unexpected nature of the mark. Their earlier performances, however, foreshadowed the greatest of this team effort. They showed great grit, determination, savvy (great handoffs) and pure speed in eclipsing the record. Next on the agenda? Sub-4:00! But first! Let's savor a great day for this crew. Nicely done, ladies!

BU Terrier: A win-win (win-win) situation

In one of the more remarkable stretches in recent memory, our hard-working sprint crew put together four consecutive heat (section) victories in the 400-meter dash on Friday afternoon. It was incredible and it was thrilling. And oh yeah, the ladies ran really fast! Here's how it went ...

Section 19: Danisha Craig, first place, 59.96 seconds
Section 20: Molly Weeks, first place, 59.92 seconds
Section 21: Courtney Cartwright, first place, 1:00.58
Section 22: Alexandra Hernandez, first place, 1:01.57; Olivia Jaquith, second place, 1:01.69.

This, of course, was a delightful omen of things to come a few hours later on the Magic Carpet ...

BU Terrier: Kristen Traub's awesome 3,000-meter run

Junior captain Kristen Traub ran a monster PR and the second-fastest 3,000-meter time in school history, easily qualifying for the ECAC Championship in that event, with a stellar 9:45.82. Michelle Gaye's two-week-old school record of 9:44.48 is the only time faster in school history. Kristen ran a tough and gutsy race in traffic most of the way, and she freed herself for an incredible finishing kick. Here are her excellent splits:
